São Bento

The neighbourhood is named after the Benedictine convent built at the end of the 16th century which at one time housed the national archives and which is today the Assembly of the Republic, headquarters of the national parliament.

In Rua de São Bento, in the busiest stretch of the street and where several cultural and historical public figures lived like Hintze Ribeiro (politician), Alexandre Herculano (writer, historian and journalist) and Amália Rodrigues (fado diva) you will find Lisbon’s most renowned antique dealers, interior design shops and extremely quaint traditional commerce.

The neighbourhood is peaceful and for the most part without traffic, making it appealing to walk around in. Once you leave São Bento you will quickly reach Bica, Bairro Alto, Chiado or the Tejo river.
